Hal Yamanouchi, born Haruhiko Yamanouchi on April 20, 1946, in Tokyo, is a Japanese actor, voice actor, dancer, choreographer, stuntman, and writer who became a naturalized Italian citizen. After studying liberal arts at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, he moved to London in 1971 to further his studies in acting and dance, becoming a student of mime artist Lindsay Kemp. In 1975, he settled in Rome and acquired Italian citizenship in 1992. He began his career as a mime, performing and choreographing for numerous theatrical productions. Since 1976, he has acted in over 100 films and TV series, working with directors such as Sergio Martino, Ruggero Deodato, and Enzo G. Castellari. He is internationally recognized for his villainous roles in films like Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and The Wolverine, in which he portrayed Ichirō Yashida/Silver Samurai. Beyond cinema, Yamanouchi has translated and dubbed Japanese films into Italian and has authored essays on Italian and Japanese cultures for Italian literary magazines. He is the father of Taiyo Yamanouchi, an actor and hip-hop artist known as “Hyst.”
